Launch of ‘Ecobuzz’ – Enewsletter

The members of the Environmental Law Clinic of GLS Law College launched the ecological e-newsletter “Ecobuzz” under the guidance of Dr.Mayuri Pandya and Dr.Parna Mukherjee. The e-newsletter was launched on 27th July, 2019 by Prof.Dr.Shanthakumar, Director of Gujarat National Law University. The endeavour of the team was to spread the message of ecology and environment and create environmental awareness in and around the campus. The e-newsletter gives information regarding latest environmental and legal issues nationally as well as globally. It also has various articles written by the members of the environmental law clinic.

Van Mohastsav Celebration

Van mohatsav is a celebration considered as an annual tree-planting movement to create enthusiasm among mass for the forest conservation and planting trees. In this era of increasing pollution, afforestation and maintaining greenery is very essential. It is a week-long festival celebrated every year from July 1st to 7th of the month. As a part of tradition GLS Law College, like last year, this year too celebrated the Van Mohatsavby means of adoption of trees by the students.

The NGO “H.E.L.P-Tree” supported and assisted GLS Law College and donated saplings to students. As a part of the celebration a pledge ceremony was undertaken by the college on Saturday, 6th July, 2019 wherein students from all the semesters had taken an active participation. To express a gratitude towards Mother Nature and as a symbolic gesture, all the students had dressed up in green attire for the celebration.

It was the day of the year when everyone went home, adopting a sapling with a responsibility to take care of it and nurture it.

Extempore Speech Competition at GLS Law College

GLS Law College under the agies of Environmental Law Clinic had organised an extempore speech competition – “Step into the Spotlight” to enhance the sudden presentation skill among the students. The theme of the competition was contemporary environmental legal issues. In the preliminary round competition 60 students participated of which, 13 selected for the final round. The final round was judged by Dr. Sanjay Vakil, Principal, H.A. College and Dr. Avani Shah, Principal of GLS Faculty of Commerce. The awardees were selected on the basis of manner, method and matter of presentation. The judges emphasised that lawyers need the argumentative skills in their professions. Thus this sort of competition has high relevance for the budding lawyers.

World Environmental Day Celebration

‘Environmental Law Clinic’ under the umbrella of GLS Law College celebrated world Environment day on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Keeping in mind the theme of the year 2018 given by UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) ‘Beat Plastic Pollution”; the students undertook a pledge along with the faculty members to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic and plastic products.

Through Posters, the students spread awareness in the campus regarding the usage of plastic and its ill effects on environment. The members of ELC made other students and community members to take pledge for reducing the usage of plastic with the campaign slogan, #SayNoToPlastic.

The Pledge says,

• Stop the use of plastic bags and use reusable cloth bags.
• Educate community people regarding environmental issues.
• Share possible solutions regarding issues.
• Implement the motto of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Dr. Mayuri Pandya , director I/C of GLS Law college, being an Environment Appellate Authority from the state of Gujarat appreciated the initiative undertaken by the students and motivated them for spreading the awareness.

World Water Day Celebration

World Water Day was celebrated by the ELC Team of GLS Law College. The students explained the importance of water through posters to other students in the campus. Considering the current global scenario of water crisis, the week-long celebration of the World Water Day played a significant role in spreading awareness regarding water conservation. The students explained the importance of turning off the water taps properly, treating water leakage immediately even to the class – IV employees in the campus to ensure minimum wastage of water.

As a part of the same, on Saturday, 24th March, 2018, Team ELC organised a debate discussing privatization of water. Participants discussed and argued its pros and cons along with effective remedies and solutions. The hashtag for this event was #EveryDropMatters.

Environment Awareness Program

In India, pollution has always been a major issue but in recent times air pollution has been so high that it started threatening the livelihood of people. One of the major reason for such problem is the huge ignorance of people towards protection of environment. The consequences of the said habit recently made Delhi’s saddening situation, filled with heavy air pollution, which day by day is affecting the health of the people. As per the recent Air Quality Index, Ahmedabad’s situation is taking the same turn as in Delhi.

Considering all these ELC undertook its second campaign #EveryBreathIsAnEffort, an initiative to spread awareness regarding the rising air pollution levels through their environment awareness program. This program had two stages.

In the first stage ELC held their campaign regarding ‘air pollution’ within their college during the law week celebration. The members of ELC made the audience aware regarding the recent pollution rising scenario of Ahmedabad through power point presentation which included data, statics, videos, natural solutions and policies by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to curb air pollution in Ahmedabad .They also explained that the crux of the problem is basically the NIMBY syndrome(NOT IN MY BACKYARD), which is the general psychology of the people towards the air pollution or any kind of pollution, where people ignore the pollution they cause and instead of righting their wrongs they blame others or the government for the same.

In the second stage the scope was broadened to include the general public of Ahmedabad. The ELC team continued this awareness program by going between the traffic signals with slogans and placards related to noise pollution and air pollution. The main aim was #StopHonkaholism and #EveryBreathIsAnEffort. The event was executed in Panjrapole circle, Panchavati and Blind People’s Association circle, which was accomplished successfully.

The Launch of ELC

Environmental Law Clinic was launched with a bang on 2nd September 2017 by the Chief Guest Hon’able Mr. Justice Peter Mohan Peiries, Retired Judge, Supreme Court of Srilanka, Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Executive Vice President, Gujarat Law Society and Dr. Mayuri Pandya, the Director in-charge of GLS Law College. The launch was booted with video which gave an insight on the preservation of environment and gave the message; ‘Earth do not owe us, we owe to this Earth’. After lightning the lamp, the brochure and logo of the ELC was also launched. The urge for such a clinic in the law school was perfectly justified by the Director of ELC as well as GLSLC – Dr. Mayuri Pandya, who has conceived the concept and need for such a clinic pertaining to the concepts and research in the area of environment.

The aim of the clinic is to provide a platform for study, research, capacity building and consultation to all the stake holders including the grass root people, industries and administrative authorities. The objective of the Clinic is to cure the environmental problems and act as an instrument for capacity building, promoting legal environmental awareness, encouraging research related to environment, initiating training programs related to environment, analyzing laws and policies and its implementation.

On the day of the launch of ELC, the clinic started with its debut campaign - #StopHonkaholism by the ever-enthusiastic student members of the clinic. The audience was made aware about the rising levels of noise pollution by the student members through slogans, power-point presentation, posters and a spectacular skit displaying the consequences of high noise pollution. The student members could successfully convince the audience for lessening the noise pollution through the reduced usage of horns while driving at the end of the event.
